ASUS Transformer Prime Tablet is Ok but Is It the Best?

My search for the perfect tablet seems to be never ending as I keep finding more and more from manufacturers and models I have never heard of. This does not mean that they are not included in my search; just that I feel I should look a bit deeper to find out if they are worth the purchase. If I can find a great deal with an off brand, I would be more than happy to buy if I can be assured that there is a good support system and if the product is well made.

This brings us to the ASUS Transformer Prime TF201-B1 GR EEE. There are many different versions of this tablet but this review is only concentrating on the 32 GB model. I saw it only briefly and I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about what this ASUS had to offer. Product Features
  • 10.1 Inch Touchscreen
  • Tough to Break Gorilla Glass
  • Front and Rear Cameras
  • Android Operating System
  • Docking Stating
You have read the last product feature and now you may be thinking, A docking station, wait, what? Yes, this is more than just a tablet, because it doubles as a notepad too which is simply amazing to me if it actually works. So, it was my mission to find out as much as I could about this transforming tablet to see if it is worth the $550 price tag. For me, a ten inch screen does not tout that high of a price considering it is possible to buy a full laptop on sale for half that price. But, were paying for the lightweight and compact nature of a tablet, not for the heft of a laptop. With that in consideration, lets take a look at more.

What Intrigues Me about This Tablet

Other than the fact that it can go from a tablet to a notepad with the docking station, there are some things about it that intrigues me. I love the 3 quad core processor because that means that it is faster than a tablet that is working on a single or dual core. The processor is the brains of the tablet so it needs to work as fast as I do and this one does. Another important aspect of a tablet that I must have is a good deal of space for photos and eBooks. With 32 GB, I do not have to worry about having enough space for all of my media. I would even have enough room for my music too. There is a slot for a micro SD card too so I can save the internal memory and not even worry about space.

What Scares Me about This Tablet

One thing that worries me about this tablet is the fact that it is not very sturdy. For $550, this thing better be pretty much indestructible. While it does have Gorilla Glass which is very strong and durable, the plastic that surrounds it is not strong at all. The touch screen lacks some sensitivity but with the docking station you can use the touch pad instead. Finally, I have a tendency to be cautious of products that come from a manufacturer that I do not know. I do not know how well the support team is or if I can get this tablet repaired anywhere. Do I have to send it in to the manufacturer if something goes wrong or if I want to upgrade the memory? This is what will keep me from spending any money on this tablet even though I love the docking station.

What Others Think
Jason Harrell says, I have numerous lockups and reboot problems. Too many to consider keeping it. I feel that this isn't really the Prime's fault but more an ICS problem, and may be fixed in a future update, but I can't take it
Tracey Zillion states, The first thing I'd like to address is the onscreen keyboard. I don't have the keyboard dock yet (and I would really like to have it now, to be honest). I am an extremely fast (and accurate) typist, so slowing down is not something I'm used to. On my iPhone, I can type as fast as I care to with very few mistakes. This is not the case with the Prime. I have to type noticeably slower and with more care for the words to not mash themselves together in unintelligible fragments. Personally this irritates me, but I know that I type considerably faster than most people, so this is probably just a personal problem. I'm not going to downgrade this to 4 stars for that reason.
Conclusion

While there are many aspects of this tablet that I really like, I am not planning on purchasing one because it quite simply is too expensive for what it does. When you make the purchase, you do not get the docking station as part of the package. You have to pay more for it and that is simply unacceptable to me. I would never pay over $700 for a notebook and Im not paying that amount for a tablet either.
