REVIEW: Black & Decker PD600 (Pivoting) Cordless Screwdriver

You may think that an electric screwdriver is a 'tool too far'...

But guaranteed, once you have one, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.

Especially if it's the Black & Decker PD600 Pivot Plus 6-Volt Nicad Cordless Screwdriver with Articulating Head.

This 6-volt rechargeable screwdriver (which can also act as a drill) offers variable speeds. The pivoting handle locks in three positions for versatile operation and it even includes an integrated LED light for visibility in those dark, awkward cupboards and corners.

For around $25, this is a, 'super addition to any toolbox - or kitchen cabinet. A great gift idea for dad - or mom, for that matter.'

(Especially mom, I'd say).

This is a tool which is wonderfully easy to use. The quick-release collar allows you to pop in a screw or drill bit in a flash; it has a nice tight grip and you can switch between forward and reverse speeds at the touch of a button.

It works for 3-6 hours on a single charge, and the ability to pivot the handle to different angles is a 'big plus' according to lots of customers.

And cordless is where it's at these days. Who wants to be plugging and unplugging tools anymore?

The customers (especially the female customers!) absolutely love this product.

'I have one of these power screwdrivers and it is a lifesaver!' said one. 'It cuts down on installion time by quite a lot.'

'Another great benefit is that it locks in to three different positions - so if you need to get to something at an awkward angle, it makes it a LOT easier,' said another.

Black & Decker have engineered a lot of functionality into this one tool. With the dual speed range you can drill holes at high speed and drive screws at the slower one. And the 23-position clutch will keep you from stripping your screws. Along with the forward/reverse rocker for backing screws out, this adds up to a lot of jobs that this baby can do.

And some of the old school might call them 'fluff' but others really like the handy tape measurer (stored inside) and light.

'I'm very impressed,' said one buyer. 'Price, form and function add up to a solid 5-star rating.'

'Excellent, versatile product,' said another. 'Design allows access to hard-to-reach places. Battery life is very good.'

'I like everything about this. The tilt, the easy change of bits, the variable power, the one-handed operation for forward and reverse, and the way it stops torqueing if the screw is in which prevents stripping the screw head,' reports a reviewer.

So what's not to like then ?

Well some people report that it is a bit big for a screwdriver. 'Almost as big as a drill,' said one. Which might be an issue if you're concerned over weight or access to really awkward spots.

And some people warned about some tricksy-ness when charging the battery.  'The design and power is pretty good for normal jobs around the house,' reports a buyer. '[but] recharging is always tricky because if you don't drain it all, the memory effect will kill the battery in a few short circles.'

So drain it properly before recharging and remember that it can take a while (up to 6 hours) to fully recharge. But then it's good for just about any job around the house.

This customer agrees - but adds a proviso over drill bits.

'This is a good product for small jobs around the house,' he says. 'The one drawback is you need to have bit type drill bits in order to use the drill feature. I found a small set at home depot but I am still searching for a larger set.'

'While this is a great screwdriver,' says another. 'I find myself digging through my toolbox for my old drill that uses real bits instead of funky hex based bits,' says another.

Overall, however, this is a good product for the price. Powerful and handy for average household use. Put it on your Christmas list (to give and also to receive!)
