Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells Review From: Bowflex

They're compact and have numerous weight settings.

It's too expensive.

If you have the money for it, go for it; otherwise, skip it for something cheaper.

Are the Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells Worth the Hype?

Though expensive ($549.00), the Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells are good for its convenience and quantity: One set allows you to choose 15 different weight settings for your dumbbells that work well with most exercise programs. Its compact design makes it good for another reason: It's easy to store in any home. Here is my review.

  • Compact; easy to store
  • Has 15 weight settings
  • Can be used for many exercises

  • Not sturdily made
  • Only goes up to 52.5 pounds
  • Expensive

Owning your own dumbbell rack probably isn't convenient--both in terms of price and its sheer size--so here's your most convenient solution: the Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells. Designed to be compact, all of the weight settings are fitted into two mid-sized dumbbells, which are made out of a black, metal material. Weights are adjusted by turning the dial at the end of dumbbells, and range from 5 pounds to 52.5 pounds. Because of the wide range of weight selection, these dumbbells are multi-purpose--working well during interval training or weightlifting, to name a few workouts. Gripping the dumbbells proves to be very easy, and has a very comfortable grip that won't blister the skin.

Because the dumbbells themselves are compact, it can also be stored nearly anywhere, making it an essential buy for any home workout space. At the most, it measures 15.75 inches long and 8 inches wide, so it can be easily stored in any workout area, closet, or even under the bed. All of the weights are kept inside of the actual dumbbells, so there isn't any need to fumble with numerous dumbbells or equipment.

Because the Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells are compact yet versatile, they serve many functions: From acting as endurance weights to deriving well during heavy-duty weightlifting exercises. Its weight increments can also be fine tuned to move up or down by 2.5 pounds; not all adjustable dumbbells can be fine tuned like the Bowflex.

Dumbbells are very versatile equipment, and therefore can accommodate many exercises--from the biceps to the quads. Dumbbells also hold a significant advantage over other equipment such as barbells, since the weights are easier to control, pick up, and put down. It also has a significant safety advantage--for instance, during bench pressing, failing to complete the movement with a barbell means the barbell could fall on your chest, or worse, your neck. With dumbbells, you simply need to drop the dumbbells when you fail; you can't do that with other equipment.

Just some of the exercises you can do with the Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells include:
  • Deadlifts
  • Squats
  • Bicep curls
  • Bench presses
  • Overhead presses
Just be aware that the metal material--which comprises these dumbbells--may not be equipped to handle a lot of wear and tear. Breakage may occur, especially if you are reckless with these dumbbells.

According to customers, these dumbbells had very few issues; aside from issues getting the dial to work occasionally, issues were virtually non-existent. The only real issue here is its price--$549.00 is a lot of pay for a set of adjustable dumbbells. To compare, some Bowflex multi-use machines cost less than this; some dumbbell sets are even cheaper, such as the Universal Power-Pak. Though the dumbbells are convenient and compact, I think the price tag is just way too high to justify the purchase.

What the Customers Say

Although it's not the best adjustable dumbbell set on the market, most customers love this device--here's why:

"Love the weights and the design. No longer need to an screw the ends to change the amount of weights per dumbbell. Pretty compact and easy to put away." - Jeff Sonar

"I've had these since October of 2010 and have never had a single issue with them. I have used them 4 or 5 days a week every week since getting them. I do P90X, P90X +, Rushfit, and other Men's Health routines, all of which require being able to quickly change weights between moves. Well worth the price." - Travis Edmonds

"I love the sound when you pull these babies out of their base. It's like pulling a sword from it's sheath. All in all, these are incomparable." - Max Coyotey

If you have a lot of money to spare, then these dumbbells aren't a bad buy. You probably don't have $500 lying around though, and for those of you who don't, I recommend skipping this for something cheaper.
