Canon 50mm 1.8 - A cheap , cheerful and awesom lens all Canon DSLR owners should have
The Canon 50mm 1.8 lens is a cracking little lens that all Canon owners should have for their digital SLR camera. The Canon 50mm f1 8 is often the first upgrade lens, and once you have had a play with one it is easy to see why.
The first thing you will notice about the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens is its dimensions. This lens is absolutely tiny and weighs virtually next to nothing, but when you consider how this lens is made this is understandable. If you put this lens on one of the smaller Canon dslr cameras, like the Rebel T3 or the eos 1100d, it looks sensible and “normal” but if you put the 50mm 1.8 lens on one of the larger Canon dlsr cameras, like the eos 1d X, this lens looks absolutely minuscule and out of place. That said, the Canon 50mm 1.8 works very well with all Canon digital SLR cameras regardless of the exact model.
The Canon 50mm 1.8 has a plastic body and looks, and feels, more like a child’s toy than a top quality piece of photography equipment. The majority of Canon lenses are tough, durable and built to last but the Canon 50mm f1 8 feels weak and fragile in comparison. Don’t let this put you off buying one however, since the 50mm 1.8 will last a long time and provide many years of service if you take care of it. Besides, the Canon 50mm f1.8 is so cheap that if you do end up breaking one you can simply go out and buy another one for little money.
The 1.8 maximum aperture is fast, which means you can take pin sharp hand held shots in low light conditions without having to use a flash, which is a big positive especially since there are many venues that don’t allow the use of a flash gun. The image quality of the Canon 50mm 1.8 is simply awesome and it is possible to capture some stunning images. The colours are bright, vivid and punchy but still realistic and not oversaturated. The contrast is great and there is good overall sharpness. When used wide open the images can be a bit soft right at the edges of the frame but stop the lens down and images are tack sharp from centre to all edges.
The 50mm focal length is ideal for portraits and the Canon 50mm 1.8 is excellent for this purpose, especially since you can get a tack sharp subject and nice blurred out background. Even though most people use the Canon 50mm 1.8 for portraits it can also be used for other types of photography, including landscapes, cityscapes and for general photography.
When you first use the Canon ef50mm 1.8 you are most likely to struggle in getting the types of shots you want. There is a learning curve with this lens so don’t dismiss it as useless if your images are not as expected the first few times you use it. If you take your time, experiment and persevere you will soon be capturing stunning images time and time again, and the effort in learning how to use the Canon 50mm lens is well worth it in the end.
One of the best things about the Canon 50mm 1.8 is the price. At around a hundred bucks this lens is super cheap and gives great bang for your buck. It really is awesome value.
Overall, the Canon 50mm 1.8 is a top lens that is well worth buying. Being made out of plastic the Canon 50mm f1 8 isn’t the toughest and most durable Canon lens but then this is to be expected given the price. Besides, if you take care of the Canon 50mm 1.8 it will last many years and provide trouble free service. So, if you are looking for a new Canon lens for your Canon dslr camera take a look at the Canon 50mm 1.8, you won’t be disappointed.
