REVIEW: Ear Force X12 Gaming Headset (Turtle Beach) - Here's my thoughts...

If you are a serious gamer then you will probably already have heard of Turtle Beach headsets.

But what you may not have heard is the quality of sound emitting from the new Ear Force X12 Gaming Headset and Amplified Stereo Sound.

For just $50.86, the Ear Force X12 gives amazing game sound and crystal-clear communication. Featuring 'massive' 50mm speakers, the headset delivers superior audio quality: 'crisp highs and deep, rumbling lows.'

The headset comes with also a series of attractive features for gamers: independent game and chat volume controls, adjustable bass and a microphone Monitor so you can hear what you're saying.

According to Turtle Beach, these new features will give you a competitive advantage, because you can hear sound cues within the games that are missed with conventional speakers; the sound of enemy footsteps, for example, or the click of a weapon being loaded in the distance.

'Take them out before they get to you,' say the manufacturers. 'It's the difference between winning and losing.'

They also promise unsurpassed comfort due to large, deep-cushioned ear cups and lightweight design.

'If you’re serious about gaming, then get serious about the sound.'

And potential customers can rely on gamers to give their opinion on the headset; so there is reliable, comprehensive feedback available on this product.

The overall verdict: excellent.

'These headphones are amazing,' said one gamer. 'I use them for my XBOX and for my computer and the sound quality is beyond what I expected.'

'I have purchased other headsets,' said another, 'and no way do they compare to the Turtle  Beach - these are great, very good quality.'

Some of the pros mentioned are the super-sensitive mic; great sound (especially the controllable bass); 'extremely comfortable, even with glasses and after multiple hours of continuous use' and a well positioned controller.

'I really love the way these things sound,' said another customer, who used the headphones for movies and music as well as gaming. 'The best headset you can buy for under $100.'

And it's not just the user who will be pleased - because when wearing this headset you won't be disturbing anyone else in the house. 'I can have the volume as loud as I wanted without disturbing my kids or wife,' said one gamer.

And anyone who has ever come home and thought World War 3 is happening in their house (when in fact it's just happening on one of the kids' computers...) will certainly appreciate this.

In fact the sound is so good you can get lost there. 'I almost got scared one time while playing Black Ops and had the bass on full,' said one reviewer. 'Definitely worth the price.'

There were a few niggles from this discerning customer base. Some said that the microphone is too sensitive - picking up background noise; and some people reported a slight 'static hiss.'

And some customers mentioned the profusion of wires. 'I was very disappointed to find out you can't run these on USB alone,' said one.

'This headset has a wire that goes from the headset to the controller, another wire that connects the headset to the xbox itself via USB port, and one long wire that and has to connect from the headset all the way to the TV,' reported another.

And not everyone found them comfortable for long periods of time. 'I would love X12 if they just put inner cushions inside,' reported one reviewer.

But generally it's a big thumbs up. 'A huge improvement over my previous headset' and great sound.

'The sound effects are awesome, you can hear footsteps, explosions, anything. It does help [in gaming], keeping you aware of your surroundings.'

But, as this reviewer noted, this won't necessarily make you a better player, 'just an aware player.'

Verdict: A recommended gaming headset.
