FULL REVIEW: Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 3010 (2D/3D Projector, 1080p)
Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 3010 promises to bring your movies to life with both 2D and 3D technology. The sound is said to be amazing with built-in 10-watt stereo speakers. Epson is known for providing high-quality home theater projectors but this is the first 3D projector they have produced so it’s getting a lot of attention.
With the incredible picture and excellent sound, the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema should be the ultimate in home entertainment but is it as good as the manufacturer claims? How did they do with their first attempt at 3D technology? Let’s start by looking at its features.
- Innovated sleek design that goes with any decor

- Split screen that allows you to view two images at the same time from different sources and you can view them side-by-side (Split screen feature is not available in 3D mode)

- Full HD, 240 Hz active shutter with 1080p technology

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 3010 Technology
The innovated technology used in this product is amazing. This device has an auto-iris and it has full HD, 1080p performance with a contrast ratio of 40,000:1 and 2200 lumens (luminous intensity), which produces very rich, colorful images. It doesn’t matter if you’re viewing bright white colors or dark colors it all has the same consistent light output.
The 10-watt stereo speakers are very clear providing real theater sound. The 3LCD chips used in this product uses 25 percent less electricity and still produces vibrant, realistic viewing that makes you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. This product is even designed to be recyclable.
One problem you might find with the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 3010 2D/3D projector is that it might be too bright, especially if used with a small screen or in a very dark room. You can change it to “Eco mode” and the lowest light setting, which is “Cinema mode” and this will reduce the brightness quite a bit, if needed.
Epson also offers the 3010e version that is a wireless system. This one cost about $200 more and the 3D glasses are not included in this version of the 3010 PowerLite Home Cinema.
What Needs to Be Improved Upon
There are a few issues with this projector that should be addressed. First, there seems to be a bit of instability when watching something in 3D and you may notice some flickering. It also picks up more crosstalk than what you may expect when compared to other 3D projectors.
The 3010 Home Cinema has a 1:6:1 zoom lens, which is very nice. However, it does not have lens shift and due to the fixed throw angle, it doesn’t set well on a rear shelf. This may cause some mounting issues.
Another concern is how much noise the fan makes when the projector is in 3D mode. You may be able to hear it during quite scenes. You can also hear the iris when it changes, which can be a little annoying.
What Others Say About It
S. Wallenhaupt from Amazon says, “I replaced an Epson Home Cinema 1080p projector that was 3 years old in order to get the 3D functionality. This projector is slightly smaller, quieter and much brighter than the previous one. It's great for regular high definition images from Blu-ray, but it also does a superb job on 3D. I have a 61" Samsung 3D plasma which does a beautiful job, but the larger image from this projector (on a 12 foot wide screen) creates a more "realistic" 3D image and a more impressive experience.”
Chancezz "Chancezz" from Amazon says, “This is my second Epon projector. Yes it is uber bright, but although brightness is a prerequisite for 3D I think Epson should have upped the ante before they released the unit. Foremost is the MOST noisey auto iris I have ever heard. Supposedly this is just the way it is. I have to say, I crank my audio system and although it is ceiling mounted just befind my head it is quite audible in it's normal mode. No light pumping or other anomalies but....jeez it is noisey. Sounds like clunking inside the unit. Also- No horizontal or vertical lense shift?? I'll be darned if I'm going to shift pixels. Color and resolution are great, and although there is some ghosting in 3D mode, 2000 lumens can right a lot of wrongs. Overall, although I must say it is not the match of the 8700 (that I replaced) I think I can be happy with this projector. Would I recommend it? If you can't afford the new Panny or the 5010- absolutely.”
The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 3010 is a sleek, modern looking 2D/3D projector with many quality features. When it comes to the quality of the images, Epson did a very good job. The 2D setting provides a rich, clear image that makes even the smallest details pop. The 3D image is very clear and crisp as well.
There may be a few issues that could be improved but overall, it seems to be a very good 3D projector. It’s the most affordable of all the Epson Home Projectors and it’s interesting that Epson decided to include two pair of glasses with this product when most manufacturers charge extra for the glasses.
