Clean and green. Can cut higher than most gas mowers, easy to store and transport.
Difficult to cut overgrown or wet grass. Doesn't deal with tall or bend weeds well. Takes longer than a powered motor.
Perfect for a smallish yard and a green planet.
No noise, no fumes, no mess and a neatly cut lawn? Can it really be true?
But all that diesel and gas and electricity doesn't quite gel with the dream of the great outdoors, does it?
Many of us will remember using push mowers as a kid... and they're generally not good memories!
Hard work and still-messy lawns. Not to mention the clean up.
But times have moved on and push mowers with them. So check out the Fiskars 6201 18-Inch StaySharp Max Push Reel Lawn Mower.
'60% easier to push than other reel mowers,' say Fiskars. And the reel is specially designed to deliver twice as much cutting power 'to blast through tough spots that would jam other reel mowers.' Well that's good, because thumping to halt as the mower hits a particularly tough patch of weed is not something anyone would want to repeat.
The StaySharp Max Reel Mower 'combines patent-pending technology with superior ergonomics to deliver best-in-class cutting performance without gasoline, oil, charging, the hassle of cords or the noise created by other mowers.'
Features include: an InertiaDrive Reel for cutting power; the StaySharp Cutting System to eliminate annual blade sharpening; easy cut height adjustment and a unique grass discharge chute that throws clippings forward.
For $199.00 you get a mess free, clean and green operation which cuts all grass types. Imagine, cutting the lawn without all the noise, smell and pollution. You can even talk on the phone or listen to music while you enjoy cutting your yard.
Yes, you read that right, customers seem to genuinely ENJOY using this product!
'I was very impressed with how quickly I was able to mow my yard,' said one buyer. 'It happened so fast I was disappointed, because I was having so much fun doing it. In fact when I mowed my grandfather's lawn, he told me I finished his entire lawn faster than he could with his riding lawnmower, which very much surprised me.''I've been using this mower for a few months and so far I've been loving it. No noise and no more fumes. I can cut the grass early in the morning before it gets hot without disturbing the neighbors,' said another.
And it's easy to assemble, and adjust, according to the reviews.
'If you're paying attention and have the right wrench, it shouldn't take more than about 5 or 10 minutes to assemble. Adjusting the blades takes another five minutes. Then you can start playing with it. I say playing because this isn't work. It's too much fun to be work. Strange, but true.
Very strange. But apparently true. Other people report it taking a little longer to put together (45 minutes), but no one mentioned any significant problems. So how about using it?
Well purchasers agree that you have to try to only cut the grass 1/3 of its height to get the best results. If you follow this 'rule' then your clippings will be 'mulchable' - i.e. you can leave them there!
'There's something strangely and endlessly satisfying about seeing the grass pour out the front and just disappear, all without much effort. Kids seem to enjoy using it too,' says an owner.
But you have to get it set right.
'Get the mower set too low, and it's not very easy (or fun) to push. Get it set too high, and it's super easy, but nothing happens. Get it set just right, and there's light resistance, and it's going to town,' says another.'I have had several reel mowers,' said another, 'and found the Fiskar to be the best by far. I have used it for two seasons and it continues to roll easily and cuts evently with little effort. It is heavier than other reel mowers and slightly less maneuverable due to the 4-wheel design. It is perfect for my small, flat yard and my grass is very healthy. Highly recommended.'
It does seem that this mower is better suited for a smaller yard; it is 'quiet and light; a far cry from the older, very heavy metal push mowers' and recommended 'as long as you aren't planning on cutting more than a quarter of an acre.'
But it does not do so well if the lawn is very wet, very thick or you have to mow uphill. Longer stray blades of grass may remain behind, and sometimes you have to go over spots twice. Plus it doesn't do so well with tall weeds, which just get pushed under.
But on the flip side of this there is very little maintenance, no fuel, no fumes and some (but not too strenuous) exercise.
'This mower is easier to push than a standard, motorized push mower,' said one buyer. 'I can mow closer to edges, and it maneuvers quite easily. I've never seen a mower cut such a fine, beautiful cut. I've gotten several compliments on my lawn since I started mowing with the Fiskars mower, and in addition to all that, I'm doing my part for the environment. I haven't used a drop of petroleum to mow since I bought this handy little rig. It's fun to mow!'
Some buyers mentioned that the 18" mowing width is not quite 18" because of the product's wheels, so you have to do overlapping cuts. And if your dream is lawn perfection, then this may not be for you. 'People who like to use a laser level to check their grass height may be disappointed,' said one reviewer.
But overall this is an impressive little machine with great results for the smaller yard. And environmentally friendly and healthy to boot!
