How Does the Fujifilm FinePix F505 Stack Up to the Competition?

Though it's not made for professional photography, the Fujifilm FinePix F505 nearly passes as a professional brand, with crystal clear 16 megapixel photo resolution and stunning high-definition video being the pinnacles of this multi-use camera.  Even better: It's hundreds of dollars cheaper than competitor models, weighing in at an affordable $149.00 (source: Amazon.com).  Here is my review.

Pros
  • Good photo and video quality
  • Its auto mode allows even novices to take professional, crisp photos
  • Lightweight and easy to use

Cons
  • LCD screen may darken videos
  • Batteries take a while to charge

Design

Designed similarly to the F300 EXR, the FujiFilm FinePix F505 is a lightweight camera designed for novice use--this being confirmed by it sleek and easy-to-use design.  From first glance, it looks to be your average digital camera, with a flat, smooth back and a smattering of buttons located on its top and back for easy accessibility.  Its greatest improvement is seen in its LCD screen, which is also located on the back panel, which displays pictures, videos, and menu options in bright, digital format.  During testing, customers noted that the LCD screen was a breeze to look at, and didn't cause any viewing problems even for those with poor vision.  The buttons too were easy to use--they respond quickly and don't have any "stickiness" issues, which sometimes plagues cheaper camera models.

The only thing that seemingly separates the FujiFilm FinePix F505 from other models is its lens--a rather big but lightweight lens on the front of the camera, which automatically zooms in and sharpens thanks to the camera's auto mode feature.  Despite its size, however, it remains rather unobtrusive.  Overall, the FujiFilm FineFix F505 is nicely designed, lightweight, and easy to figure out--a plus for novices.

Photo Functionality

The FujiFilm FinePix F505's greatest asset is most likely its functionality; despite looking like a regular digital camera, it is well adept at taking images and videos in high quality, which some people argue matches that of a professional camera.  Its most noted feature is its auto mode, which automatically adjusts the focus and light according to the environment surrounding it--which, amazingly enough, this camera can sense in just a split of a second.  There's no need to manually adjust this yourself, which you have to do with professional cameras, such as the Canon Rebel XS; as an added bonus, the FujiFilm FinePix F505 also takes photos in near-professional quality.  This means you'll be able to take photos in most environments without having to manually readjust the camera's light or focus.

"It's way better at doing its job than comparable auto features on other digital cameras," says an Amazon.com customer.  "You don't have to be an expert at photography because the camera does all the technical work for you."

Video Functionality

If its image functionality wasn't enough, the FujiFilm FinePix F505 comes with another feature: Video recording.  Though most standard digital cameras come equipped with this feature, this camera differs in that it automatically records in 1080p--a high-definition standard.  Recording is also easy, and videos currently being recorded can be viewed through the camera's LCD screen.  Audio and light problems did not prove to be a problem either, though in some dark settings, the LCD screen made the video look darker than it actually was during recording--a slight but not insignificant issue.  Battery life is also quite long--it lasts three to four hours, according to customers--so you needn't worry about your videos being cut short by intermittent battery life.  Be warned that its batteries take a while to charge, however.

Customer Response

Overall, the FujiFilm FinePix F505 is a hit with customers, who say that its high resolution photo and video modes are perfect for everyday use.  Here's what they had to say:

"The camera is responsive, has the shooting modes you'd expect, though I've been leaving in on full auto, because for once I've found a camera that really might be smarter than me. The camera is dead easy to use, but most of all, it takes great photos."

"This little camera is great. It takes pictures that are as good as the Canon Rebel a girl in my class has!"

"It's difficult to avoid superlatives when describing this camera. I really am very impressed with its quality and features."

Verdict

Overall, the FujiFilm FinePix F505 is an excellent camera for novices who want the sharpness and focus of a professional camera without the confusion.  My recommendation: This is a must buy if you love take pictures or videos.
