Hostgator REVIEW - Green Host Service

Hostgator's Web Presence:

Serving over 400,000 customers worldwide, Hostgator is having a significant effect on their corner of the world. Hopefully their green efforts will set an example for other web hosts to follow. They also offer an incredible reseller program so if you're working with companies who are concerned for the environment, you can recommend Hostgator to them, wholeheartedly as a genuine solution. is also designed with customer ease of use in mind. They have a demo for their free site builder as well as for their easy control panel so you can get a good feel for the service before plunging in. Other great pluses include 4,500 free templates for your website in case you're just starting out, a 99.9% uptime guarantee (now that's hard to beat!), unlimited bandwith and disk space and a 45 day money back guarantee. If you're coming from another web server they offer free domain, file, database and script transfers making the process effortless and seemless. In fact they won an award for Best free transfer system in 2011, along with impressive multiple Best of awards including Best small business, code of conduct, Best reseller web hosting, Best windows web hosting, Best budget hosting and others.

Eco Friendly:

If you're concerned about the environment, is the best web host option. Apparently web hosting produces a lot of carbon emissions. This was news to me. In fact, the average server produces the same emissions as a 15 mpg SUV!!

What makes a profoundly cool company is that ALL of their shared and reseller servers are now 130% wind powered! That doesn't just neutralize their environmental impact it actually reverses it. Complete awesomeness the likes of which I haven't seen in most other hosting company (I've also reviewed another great alternative for green websites. We'll get to a quick green comparison of the two companies below.) In any event, to give you some perspective on the effect Hostgator's greening has on climate change, it's the equivalent of saving 5,654 barrels of oil or 551 acres of forest per year! Pretty cool!

Hostgator's commitment to Green:

The IT sector has a HUGE climate impact. Currently between 3-4% of all electricity used in the world goes to running data centers. While some other hosts claim to be green Hostgator really stands out from the pack because they use renewable wind energy to both power and cool their servers. Servers give off tremendous heat. Using renewable energy to cool them results in twice as much renewable energy than the hosting companies who only use green energy to power their servers.

Hostgator's commitment to green is backed up by RECs which means all it's renewable energy sources are verified, tracked and monitored. No lip service to green here. In fact they have gone further in their green efforts than any other hosting company out there. They're proud and they're the real deal!!

Finally, they're thinking globally and acting locally. Instead of sourcing their RECs from wherever's cheapest they only get them from their home state of Texas. This is the main distinction between them and is a much larger scale operation and they don't follow the think global act local credo. So it really depends on how green you want to go with your website. Either is a great choice. Hostgator is a bit more warm fuzzy and thorough in their commitment to green principles. IPage offers the sense of security and reliability that comes from a bigger operation. Both are reliable companies so you really can't lose! It's all down to what you're comfortable with, what kind of business you want to partner with and what your business stands for.

So should you go for it?

In assessing Hostgator's overall persona, I'd say they're not the biggest kid on the block but they're definitely one of the most popular! They're running their business in an honorable way, with integrity and I'd highly recommend them for anyone, especially those concerned about the environment.

It also reflects well on your online business! You can proudly display your eco-friendly label and give customers an additional reason to flock to you!

With competitive pricing (starting at $3.96/month) and excellent reviews for customer support hostgator proves you don't have to sacrifice to go green. Their tag line is "we eat up the competition" I'd change it to "we recycle the competition!"
