REVIEW: KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer (5-Quart)
Those of you who had mothers or grandmothers who baked will almost certainly classify the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer as such.
This 5 quart version of KitchenAid's classic is a substantial piece of equipment, making 'child's play' of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream.
It comes with three different attachments - a flat beater for making batter, a wire whip for egg whites and air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs.
The 325-watt motor can handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily; plus the machine is designed with a tilt-head, slide speed control and substantial all-metal construction. It's also well adept at mixing any mixtures needed for intricate recipes.
You can also purchase optional attachments such as a citrus juicer.
The mixer comes in over 20 colors from pistachio ($299.99) to bosenberry ($349.99) to classic white ($251.40).
They all look great! So much so that many people don't worry about putting it away after use.
'I love this mixer and leave it out on my counter,' said one customer.
But that doesn't mean that it's all for show.
'This mixer is is a workhorse,' said another. 'I have already made bread dough several times. And it is so much easier and faster than kneading by hand! It mixes quickly and evenly. I love it.'
In fact a huge proportion of reviewers agree that this machine has both 'style and performance.'
And it's clear that the mixer has long been a object of desire for many people.
'I have been wanting one of these mixers for years... I used the mixer to make my famous "quesadilla" (sweet cheese bread) and loved the ease and simplicity when operating it, the cleaning was also a breeze. I look forward to using it for many years.'
Clearly worth the investment - and a favorite for that extra special gift which will last.
'I bought this for my daughter for Christmas 2011. She is a senior in college and has increasingly taken to baking with my wife when she is home on holidays so I decided this might make a great gift that can last a lifetime - I love gifts that fall into that category. We have had a KitchenAid mixer for at least 20 years and it still looks new. There is no other appliance in our kitchen that is anywhere near that age and in that condition. Highly Recommended.'
And receivers of the gift are just as pleased as givers!. 'I am so happy my husband thought I was worth it,' said one.
Customers praise the easy-to-clean features as well, and the sturdy construction: 'Built like a Church,' said one. 'As sturdy as a tank,' said another.
And KitchenAid also garner high praise for their customer support and service. One lady had problem with the adjustment of her beater/bowl clearance. 'I got instructions by calling customer support at KitchenAid. The technician told me to drop a dime into the empty bowl, turn the mixer on (about setting 2) using the flat beater, and it should move the dime 1/4" to 1/2" each time it rotates around the bowl.'
'This is the right clearance for the beater to mix everything at the bottom of the bowl, but not low enough to cause wear. I tweaked the adjustment screw setting 1/4 turn each time until I got that dime moving. At this setting, I can now beat a single egg white to stiff peaks in the 5 quart bowl. That's impressive.'
There were a few reports of technical issues such as sudden noises, breakers going and small parts becoming loose, and again KitchenAid get points for good service.
'KitchenAid does have great customer service,' said one customer who'd had to return a unit because of a fault. 'They really do try to make you happy. You can call just for advice, too.'
And a very few reviewers think that this is, 'not the product it used to be.'
However it should be noted that out of many many reviews only around 2% report any difficulties, and in these cases the product was replaced.
And some advise that if you are intending to mix bread dough every day then you may want a bigger machine. 'This is a wonderful product for mixing up cake batter and cookie dough,' said one user. 'We were disappointed in its performance making bread dough.'
And another said that the only negative was its weight. 'I guess that's part of what makes it so substantial,' she added.
But overall the consensus is that, 'it's wonderful' and the only dilemma is over which color to purchase.
