FULL REVIEW: Logitech G13 (Programmable Gameboard)
- Buttons are easy to reach and press
- Contains 25 programmable buttons
- Design naturally contours to your hand
- Its LCD screen is useless
- Clunky; hard to move around
- Made only for left-handed use
At first glance, the Logitech G13 appears to be nothing more than a calculator you can rest your hand on, the buttons splayed across a big, plastic surface. The buttons are smaller on the button, but bigger on the top, and a nice rest area sits just below the last row of buttons. I didn't think much of it at first, but then I realized how ingenious this was: This naturally fits the natural curve of your hand. Should you need to reach the uppermost buttons, your fingers will naturally flex to the correct position; if you need to reach downward, you simply move your hand slightly to reach the right position.
Though I think pressing the lower buttons can create an awkward hand position, overall, it is neatly designed and naturally fits the curves of your hand, regardless of how big or small it is.
Based on online demonstrations of the product, I can say that I'm pleased with its operability. The buttons rarely misfire or are difficult to press; everything seems to respond quickly. Reaching these buttons only takes a split second when compared to pressing them on a regular keyboard as well, as your fingers don't need to travel as far to reach the buttons.
During a demonstration of the Logitech G13 during World of Warcraft game play, the gameboard worked seamlessly with the macro setups set by the player, with spells and attacks firing more quickly compared to his keyboard-using friends. Overall, I think this gameboard will be a huge advantage in games where key bindings are often used, such as World of Warcraft.
Feature-wise, the Logitech G13 doesn't boast the most innovative features. Like with most gameboards, it allows you to save your customized key bindings to a profile, which can be accessed and turned on at any time. You're of course allowed to set up customized key bindings to any of its 25 keys as well--and compared to other gameboards, the Logitech G13 has the most keys period. That's good if you have a lot of key bindings.
One unique feature the Logitech G13 has is a LCD screen, which juts just above the top row of keys. But what it does disappoints me, to say the very least--it simply displays the profile data of whatever game (or game character) you're playing. For example, if you're playing a mage in World of Warcraft, it will display the data of that character. While it's an interesting feature, I find it useless, as I can easily access this data in-game; I'm very unlikely to be looking at the gameboard during gameplay anyways. Perhaps other people will find this useful, but for me personally, I think it's a waste.
As a gameboard, the Logitech G13 is highly favored by gamers--even more so than than other popular keypads, such as the Razer Nostromo Gaming Keypad. Here's what they had to say:
"I've had the G13 for almost 6 months. I initially got it for Warcraft. After some initial trial and error in how to best set it up, it works really well for that and had majorly improved my game play."
"I realy like my G13. Have had it a few weeks now. I'd say it took me about 2 to 3 hours of play time to get used to it and maybe another hour or so to tweek mappings to where I like them."
Although I'm not a big fan of gameboards, I have to say I really like the Logitech G13. It's smartly designed, fits smoothly against your palm, and has over 20 programmable keys--perfect for those who have numerous key binds. If you play a lot of online games, this gameboard is essential for becoming a better player.
