The combination of a large display with a feature-rich GPS and backup camera makes this a must-have for those that can afford it. Add to this the feature of spoken street names and advance warnings of highway exits and you have one of the best GPS systems I've tested.
Sometimes the system loses its wireless connection with the backup camera, which can be frustrating. Also, if you aren't lucky enough to have an automobile that provides easy access to the wiring for its backup lights, installation can be tedious and expensive.
The combination of the RoadMate 9055LM GPS and the wireless backup camera makes this a must-have accessory for older automobiles.
New Magellan Roadmate and Backup Camera may Make your Car Street Leagal in 2014
The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration has asked Congress to mandate that backup cameras be built into every car manufactured after 2014. This action was the result of a report from KidsandCars.org that maintained that two children die and about 50 are injured every week when drivers accidentally back over them. This oft-delayed push for new auto safety regulations still has a way to go before becoming law and the deadline for compliance may change, but it's best to be prepared.
But what do you do if you have an older car that isn't equipped with one of these devices? A GPS and wireless backup camera from Magellan can help you remedy that problem.
The Magellan RoadMate 9055LM GPS ($249.99) works with a Magellan Wireless Backup Camera ($149.99) providing a clear picture of what is up to 45 feet behind your vehicle.
The backup camera is easily attached to the top or bottom of your rear license plate and requires that two wires extending from a wireless transmitter be connected through your car's trunk to the backup lights on your vehicle. Other vehicles require professional installation, which can be costly, but it's worth it. Magellan recommends professional installation for all vehicles.
The 9055LM communicates wirelessly with the transmitter giving you a rear view on the GPS unit every time your automobile is put into reverse. Plus you get a large, clear image due to the 9055LM's seven-inch color touch screen. I've discovered that the wireless receiver will periodically cut out or lose the signal from the wireless transmitter. But the loss of signal is only a "blip" on the screen and the picture is quickly restored. This often happens if you back over a bump in the driveway or parking lot.
The GPS capabilities of the RoadMate exceeded my expectations. Most GPS units provide accurate routing information but simply tell the driver to "turn right" of notify the driver when he or she has arrived at the destination. The RoadMate 9055LM takes this a big step further by announcing street names, preventing drivers from turning too soon or too late. It also gives drivers clear, advance warnings of highway exits by displaying signs and indicating whether the exit is on the left or right.
This GPS system will also give you advance warnings of accidents or traffic congestion and will automatically reroute you around the problem areas. The one caveat here is that the area you're driving through must be able to provide the system with traffic reports.
The camera features:
-- A wide-angle view lens.
-- It's adjustable to 45 degrees, so it can be used with any type of vehicle.
-- You get a warning tone if you are too close to another vehicle or object when backing into a parking space.
-- It's dustproof and waterproof.
-- The transmitter is water resistant.
The 9055LM adds the following GPS features:
-- Free lifetime map updates.
-- Bluetooth enabled hands-free calling with a built-in microphone.
-- An A/V input for movies or music.
-- It displays highway signs so you can be in the correct lane before taking an exit.
-- Spoken street names and directions.
-- A one-touch favorites menu that lets you bookmark your favorite destinations and searches.
-- Free Lifetime Traffic provides real-time traffic information so you can avoid traffic jams, detours and construction zones.
-- Six million points of interest.
-- AAA Member Roadside Assistance which shows your exact location and the phone number for AAA.
-- Plus all of the features you expect from a premium GPS system such as automatic rerouting, a built-in address book and route customization.
