Review of "Rocket Italian", by Maria DiLorenzi

If you've ever tried to learn Italian, you already know your options are limited.  Taking a language class doesn't work because you can't learn at your own pace--the teacher simply rushes you along, hoping you'll absorb whatever information she says from lecture to lecture.  Books aren't a good investment either, since they can be boring, hard to follow, and won't allow you to see how real Italian is spoken in its native country.

But there is a third option.  It's called a self-guided language learning program.

While most language programs lack the depth or complexity to teach Italian thoroughly and competently, a few of them use something called "integrative learning."  This essentially means they use multiple modules to enable people to learn a language instead of simply memorizing the lessons.

Currently, the #1 rated integrative learning program is Rosetta Stone--which, if you have around $400 lying around, may be a viable investment.  But if you don't have that sort of money lying around, there is a cheaper option, called Rocket Italian.  It's been nicknamed the poor man's Rosetta Stone, and that's exactly what it is--a cheaper, less sophisticated, but overall useful learning program for learning Italian fast.

Here's what to expect from Rocket Italian.

What is Rocket Italian?

Rocket Italian is a completely self-guided language learning program created by Rocket Languages--the company behind Rocket GermanRocket Japanese, and Rocket Chinese.

The term "self-guided" means you have complete control over how fast or how much you learn.  This differs from traditional learning methods, such as classroom learning, where you're at the mercy of the person who is lecturing you.

To help people learn Italian really fast, Rocket Italian uses multiple modules to enhance the learning experience--from audio MP3s that break Italian down with the "chunking" method to vocabulary games, such as MegaVocab and MegaAudio.  With the vocabulary games, you quickly learn new vocabulary terms by clicking the correct term that is played by audio or represented by a picture.

To test your knowledge, Rocket Italian also contains quizzes, which you are free to take at any time.

You can choose to download these lessons immediately online, or if you like having a physical copy, ordering a 20 CD set from their website.

Issues with Rocket Italian

If there's one main issue that may detract you from this product, it's this--it makes no mention of forum or email support.  In other versions of Rocket Languages, such as Rocket German, purchase of the product immediately comes with access to a secret, exclusive learning forum and 24/7 email support from the creator of the program.  There is no mention of this on the Rocket Italian website, which is a bit concerning.

However, some customers have mentioned that forum and email support exists, but it may have been for an earlier version of Rocket Italian, since they also mention that the creator's name at the time was Alex Marino.  The creator's name right now is Maria DiLorenzi.

What the Customers are Saying

Despite the lack of forum and email support, Rocket Italian is still well liked by its customers.  Here's what they had to say:

"The Rocket Italian approach to learning has been really effective in keeping my interest level high.  I enjoy the interactive nature of each lesson and I find repeating each lesson several times helps me."

"If you want to know the Italian language in just a few months then this software program is for you."

"They attempt to teach Italian as it is spoken and throw in a healthy dose of slang and idioms too.  This course has been great and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn or refresh their knowledge of Italian."

So--is Rocket Italian worth your money?  Absolutely, but only as a learning program for people who don't already know Italian.  This program isn't designed for those with an already immediate to expert grasp on the language, so if you are looking for more advanced lessons, this probably isn't the best program.
