Samsung Waterproof HD Camera Review From: Samsung

Can be used underwater. Hard to break.

Image quality is poor. Not very good zoom controls.

It's a good child-proof camcorder.

Does the Samsung Waterproof HD Camera Stack Up to the Competition?

At $102.99, the Samsung Waterproof HD Camera is a frugalista's paradise--and a must go-to camera for parents. With the ability to withstand drops up to 6.5 feet and a waterproof lens, children (and adults) will have a hard time breaking this camera. Here is my review.

  • Can be used to film underwater
  • Drop-proof; can withstand drops up to 6.5 feet
  • Records in high resolution

  • Image quality is poor
  • Lack of zoom controls

Rectangular in shape, the Samsung Waterproof HD Camcorder is about as basic as it gets: Its 2.3 inch LCD screen, fog-proof lens, and selection of touch-sensitive buttons aren't anything new; they are fairly easy to figure out. The power tends to be super sensitive, so you may accidentally press it on or off during recording--not a good thing.

Size-wise, this device is slightly bigger and bulkier than the rest, though it still measures around 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.8 inches (HWD), smaller than the Bloggie 3D but smaller than the Kodak PlaySport ZX5. It's a camera designed for a lot of wear of tear, so it's been designed to withstand some common environment changes, such as water submersion, sudden drops, and fog build-up. During testing, PC Mag revealed these features definitely do work--though dropping it from more than 5 feet caused the camera to freeze temporarily, it otherwise performed perfectly during all test situations. Overall, this is a basic camera whose main features are quite unique, at least as far as pocket camcorders are concerned.

To test it out, several customers used the camera in several situations--under water, outside, and as a picture camera. Although the Samsung Waterproof HD Camcorder also advertises itself as a high definition camera, it clearly faltered here: Images and videos looked far from excellent, even at the camera's high resolution settings. Details that would otherwise be captured with other pocket camcorders look blurred here, such as the detail of a leaf or the details in a dress or skirt. Zoom was also far from perfect, only going up to 1x optical zoom, and often led to unwanted video "shakiness." As a plus here, the color and saturation levels were adequate, and often displayed true to life. Be careful not to film in low light, where image and color quality can be compromised.

Aside from its ability to withstand heavy drops or water, the Samsung Waterproof HD Camera also contains a variety of color and image settings--settings not incredibly innovative, but helpful. Settings are set to enhance the scenery of specific locations, such as the beach or underwater play, which typically enhances the color and saturation to fit the environment.

As far as I can tell, these settings cannot be customized, however--to manually edit color and saturation levels, you may have to invest in a better camcorder. For easy uploading, the Samsung Waterproof HD Camera also contains a flippable JSB connector, meaning you won't have to use a separate USB cable to connect the camcorder to the computer. For easy viewing via HDTV, the side panel also contains a tiny HDMI slot.

Customer Reviews
"I really like the waterproof feature and used it a lot. It takes pretty good pictures, but my Cannon PowerShot takes MUCH better pictures. As for the "Full HD" capabilities... this is where I was the most disappointed. In bright light with very little action, it does do a pretty good job at HD. However, if there is a lot of movement in the shot (like splashing water or when using in a moving vehicle or boat), the resolution is pretty poor." - Mlwarren1
"If you're in the market for a pocket camcorder go with this one and not the Flip. It is rugged, waterproof, and ready to record 2 seconds after you turn it on." - Zimmy

Although video and image quality is lacking, this camera is virtually indestructible--an excellent camera to give to your kids, who may not be as careful with it. Recommendation: If video quality isn't a concern, go with this video camera.
