Review Snapshot

Great storage capacity, very fast and good value for the price.

You need to be upgraded to 3.0 USB ports to take advantage of the faster transfer speed.

All in all a good external for the price and the features you get with it.

Seagate Expansion 3 TB External Hard Drive is a Great Value

A good, quality external hard drive is practically a must-have for anyone who uses a computer regularly these days. There are multiple uses for them including backup storage and also to keep your internal hard drives clean for maximum performance. Another benefit is that you can use the same file storage for multiple devices.

For example, I can save work I do on my desktop to my external and then plug it into my laptop to have the same access without switching files around all over the place. When considering options for a new external, I came across the Seagate Expansion 3 TB which looks good at first glance. I’ve used Seagate hard drives before and they are pretty good. I am also a big fan of Western Digital so I was going to have to explore this model more deeply to see if I went with it or a Western Digital external instead.

Here are the basics.

Product Features
  • USB 2.0 or 3.0 Connection
  • Fast Transfer Rates
  • Small and Compact
  • Energy Efficient
  • Plug and Play
From the features list, it seems that this hard drive has just about everything I could want in one, along with the high storage capacity.  This uses the new USB 3.0 connectivity which is a new standard for USB transfers and peripherals that adds more speed and functionality to the devices.  If you want to take advantage of this port type, you need to have one already installed in your computer or add one to your existing computer by purchasing one online.

I need my externals as much as I need a great gaming mouse or a keyboard for doing my work every day so the features are important to me.

Why I Like This Drive

I have already stated that I like the large capacity of this hard drive but I was amazed at the price of just over a hundred bucks.  I have seen drives that are one terabyte and smaller that sell for a comparable price so I am just blown away by that aspect.  I can remember when these high volume hard drives were four times the cost that they are today and this was just a year or two ago.  I am thrilled to know that I waited long enough for the price to come down and now I am ready to make my purchase.  I do like the high transfer rates but it is a bummer that I need to get new USB 3.0 ports to take advantage of the high speeds.

It Does Have its Problems

This is not the most stable of all the drive types as many report having problems with it shutting down and never starting back up again.  This is thought to be a fault in the construction of the casing and electrical output rather than an issue in the hard drive itself.  While it is difficult, the drive can be removed from the casing and installed into a different external hard drive case and this seems to fix the problem.  Although breaking into the casing does remove the warranty so it is best to simply return it and have a new one shipped out.  Keep in mind that when running this hard drive on a USB 2.0 port is not going to give you the high transfer rates that can be had with the newer USB port type.

What Others Think
Potestasx says, “Good drive. Super fast. Once you go USB 3 you never go back.”
Troy Coutu adds, “Fresh after the hard drive shortage we’re now seeing some decent prices on HDDs again and this new deal from Amazon is definitely worth a mention. For only $139.99 you can get your hands on this compact Seagate STAY3000102 Expansion drive with 3 Terabytes of storage!”

When I finally make the choice on which external hard drive I want to purchase this may very well be the one that I go with.  I like both the price and the storage capacity and both of these features are very important to me.  If I do buy this one, I do plan on also purchasing the USB 3.0 ports for our computers just to make the transfers and backups go faster.  I do not see the point of buying a hard drive that is super fast without having the hardware to allow it to do its job.  This may be an added expense but with the money I’m saving on the drive I can justify the purchase of the USB ports.
