Great company with solid reputation. Good range of features for the price. Excellent customer feedback from both novice and experienced sewers.Cons
Some issues with adjustments on initial use. Foot pedal and chord are separate which makes control 'feel' different.Verdict
An excellent buy that will stand you in good stead for many years (and projects) to come.
Is the Singer 7256 Fashion Mate sewing machine REALLY as good as they say?
It may have fallen out of fashion for a while (no pun intended), but over the last 5 years or so there has been a steady creep of sewing blogs, sewing websites, home designers and entrepreneurs who have reignited our urge to design, create and sew our own clothes and home furnishings.
But where to start? After all you might want to quilt and embroider as well as sew seams. You might never have used a sewing machine before or even threaded a needle. Or the last machine you tried might have been that old foot-treadle machine of the type you still see sitting in people's garages or garages sales.
Enter the Singer 7256 Fashion Mate computerized sewing machine.
Singer is one of the world's leading sewing machine brands, founded in 1851, with a long history of innovation including creating the first portable machine and zigzag machine.
For just $199.97 the Fashion Mate comes with advanced features such as an automatic needle threader, easy top drop-in bobbin system, push-button stitch selection and StayBright LED work light.
(For those of us who do sew, on old machines, this sounds amazing already! Threading needles is time consuming and hard on the eyes, dials for stitch selection can be unreliable and the bobbins on the old machines always get tangled...)
It comes with great accessories - a sewing DVD, zipper foots and buttonhole foots, needles, spare spool pins, darning plate and instruction.
This is, 'the gateway to sewing for people around the world.'
Whether you're an experienced needle-person (for there are men out there who sew!) or a novice bursting with unrealized ideas, this is an easy-to-use, versatile sewing machine featuring a great variety of stitches for an even greater variety of projects: fashion sewing, quilting, heirloom, crafts, home and decorative sewing.
And the reviews of this product are almost universally positive.
'I was very surprised that a sewing machine could be budget-priced,' said one customer, 'yet have the features and stitch repertoire of a much more expensive machine. If you are looking for a do-all machine and don't have megabucks to spend, this could be a very excellent choice.'
And others agree that the features you get for the price, along with the solid reputation of the Singer brand, make this a great buy.
'Most of the time,' said one craftsperson, 'if you want to buy a beginner-level sewing machine, you will not get automatic buttonholes nor electronic stitch choice. There are a lot of stitches here, including quite a few ornamental embroidery-types stitches that are handy for children's clothing, bedding, housewares and quilting.'
The machine can also handle twin needles - great for hemming and top stitching.
And beginners are just as happy.
'It's attractive, very light and sews like a dream. Now I understand why people enjoy sewing,' said one customer. And she wasn't the only one to say, 'I've sewn something almost every day since purchasing.'
'I am a novice,' said another, 'but I picked this right up. Couldn't be happier.'
'This is by far one of the best sewing machines that Singer has made,' said another buyer. 'Very easy to learn to use, and the quality of the machine itself is fantastic. One of the best purchases that I have made.'
'Been using my machine for about a month,' said an experienced sewer. 'Finished quilt borders, quilt blocks, and been refashioning several outfits. Machine is working fantastic! Great machine, great service!'
There were only a couple of cautions. 'Watch your bobbins' said one, 'mine was making the bobbins too loose, so I tightened the bobbin wind tension.' Another user mentioned adjusting thread tension - but all agreed these hiccups were just a matter of getting used to the machine.
And you may have to buy more accessories, for example a speciality foot for quilting.
'Overall it is a very easy machine to use,' said one review, 'and it truly stitches beautifully and much better than my older machine.'
Now I love my sewing machine but these reviews have really got me thinking if I need to upgrade! And recommendations don't come higher than that!
