Review Snapshot

The camera is very well built and feels sturdy in your hand. The camera is very fast working and offers very little waiting for it to complete tasks.

The Sony DSC-RX100's menu is rather hard to find your way around and takes a good dozen or so times using the camera to start to remember where some of the features are located.

In short the Sony DSC-RX100 is a quality camera and I would recommend it too anyone thinking or upgrading their current compact digital camera. This camera has so many features that you would find on some full size cameras that are twice the price, but are all included in the compact camera for half the price.

Review of the Sony DSC-RX100 20.2 MP Exmor CMOS Sensor Digital Camera with 3.6x Zoom

The Sony DSC-RX100 is a remarkable compact camera, it is astounding that Sony was able to pack so many new features in such a small camera. The Sony R&D department would have to be some of the most forward thinking futurist on the planet, to not only come up with some of the ideas that they have, but to actually be able to make them a reality. The Sony DSC-RX100 packs more punch and offer more features than some full cameras that are twice the price.

The most remarkable feature of this camera is the 1” CMOS image sensor, which is up from 1/2.3” which enable the camera to make the most of the 20.2 MP image size, a result which some would say is far and beyond any other cameras capability at the present time.

The actually usability of the camera is rather good, although the menu is not so easy to navigate, like any new piece of equipment, there is a small learning curve to remember where your favorite features are, but that is the same as any other piece of new digital equipment we buy these days. However this leads me to one of my favorite features, the MR (memory recall) mode can memorize up to three groups of your preferred settings. These settings can include zoom, white balance, exposure compensation, date, and grid lines. This allows you to quickly switch to the right settings at the right moment.

The Sony DSC-RX100 is extremely responsive, at processing the images and resetting itself between shots, offer’s virtually no lag whatsoever. Testament to this is Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode which in Advanced Mode, enables the camera to take a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which is better.

When testing this camera on a daily basis I found that it was very easy to use and I was not hindered by any particular function or capability of the camera. What I mean by this is whenever I wanted to use the camera I could just turn it on and point and shot, unlike other cameras I have used in the past where you have to spend 5 minutes setting up the camera before every shot, and what’s more is that when you simply do turn it on and point and shoot the images it takes are very clear and crisp. I would say that only 1 picture in 20 I felt I was not happy with the first time and re-shot it. This is an extremely good ratio and I have not found this in any other camera I have tested in the past.

I tested this camera in various situations and in various conditions and found it to be a delight to use, especially when night shooting, a lot of digital camera’s fail miserably at night, but not the Sony DSC-RX100, its night shots are amazing, and the few that weren’t up to my standard were fixed with the iSCN’s auto mode, where the camera took a second shot with different setting’s and gave me the option of which picture to choose, I absolutely loved this feature and had it enabled 90% of the time. It also saved me a couple of times with my partner, when she said to me make that is a good one, luckily with this camera, it is almost impossible to get a bad photo. By the end of my weekend of testing I was actually sad to have to give it back, but fortunately I had 100’s of good photos to show for it.
