UltimateFontDownload.com REVIEW - Worth It?

If you're a designer, or use a variety of fonts in commercial work, such as advertisements, having thousands of fonts are absolutely essential for creating designs easily and seamlessly.  As someone who is involved in the web design industry--I've freelanced web design work for multiple clients--I need to have thousands of unique, commercial-license fonts at my disposal, and it's not uncommon for me to use three or more fonts when designing a website.  However, finding these fonts can be tedious--extremely tedious--if you're simply downloading fonts individually from the web; just downloading one font for me can take up to 30 minutes.

Designer Jason Nolan, the guy behind 1001freefonts.com, knows this, and to meet the demand of designers and website creators, he has created a new resource: Ultimate Font Download.

What is Ultimate Font Download?

Here's how it works: For a nominal, $19.95 fee, Nolan will allow you to download 10,000 fonts, which have been cleared for personal and commercial use.  This means if you want to use for commercial reasons, such as creating an advertisement, you don't need to ask for permission from the font creator--you can simply use it "as is."

Unfortunately, you're not allowed to view all of the fonts contained in this download, aside from the samples posted on its website.  These samples include fonts found on other free font download websites, such as Tampico and Agent Orange.

I know what you're probably thinking: Why would I pay to download a bunch of free fonts?  Well, this download isn't actually a new way to access pay fonts--it's just a faster way of downloading free fonts that are already on the Internet.  Think of it as a paid service to download a bunch of fonts fast.  If you're really pressed for time and need to download a bunch of fonts right now, then Ultimate Font Download will allow to do that in less than a minute.  If you tried to download fonts the traditional way--by hand-picking fonts through websites--it would take days, if not weeks, to download 10,000 fonts.

So, that's what you're paying for here: an easier way to download more fonts.

Drawbacks of Ultimate Font Download

As I mentioned earlier, one of the drawbacks of Ultimate Font Download is that you can't view all of the fonts prior to downloading.  The website only shows a small sample of the included fonts on its front page.  Any clue of what this download contains comes from just one sentence: "Choose from our huge collection of formal, casual, calligraphic and blackletter fonts."  Nowhere does it explain the types of fonts it contains in this download.

Chances are you like to know what you're downloading, so this is a problem.  In fact, it's a big problem--many people say they won't use Ultimate Font Download just because of they can't view the fonts they're downloading.

"I really have nothing against the download thing," says one critic. "I just find having 10000 fonts somewhat pointless, regardless of the quality/cost."

Another critic adds: "I would rather have 10 powerhouse professional fonts than an endless supply of free fonts that cannot be used in a professional context."

Conclusion

So, on the one hand, you can download a lot of fonts instantly.  That's good if you need a lot of fonts right now.  But on the other hand, you may be downloading fonts that are completely useless--and you're paying money for it too.  My opinion: If you just need a lot of fonts, then you want to use Ultimate Font Download.  If you want to pick and choose what you download, however, you're better off sticking with 1001FreeFonts.com instead, which Nolan also owns.
