Review Snapshot

Anecdotal evidence of success with the methods. Relaxation techniques and visualization may be helpful.

Not scientifically proven. No independent endorsements of the methods.

Don't throw away your glasses. Vision problems should be checked by a qualified optician in case there is a serious underlying issue.

"Vision Without Glasses" by Duke Peterson - REVIEW

Vision without glasses? Is it really possible?
Yes, of course it is, if you're naturally blessed with 20/20 vision and show no deterioration over your lifetime.
Which, as we all know, is pretty rare.
But hold your horses, here. Duke Peterson, proponent of Vision without Glasses says he has 'discovered the secret to restore near-perfect 20/20 vision.'
No surgery, no pills or potions - this is an all-natural solution.
Vision with Glasses is an step-by-step program (in the form of e-Books) based on the work of Dr W.H. Bates.
Dr. Bates' methods claim to address a wide-range of vision problems such as Myopia (near-sightedness), Hyperopia (far-sightedness), Presbyopia (Old-Age Sight), macular degeneration, eyestrain and glaucoma.
This is, according to Vision without Glasses, a 'quick and reliable way to regain your natural vision abilities.'
Furthermore, Dr. Bates (and the proponents of Vision without Glasses), claim that glasses and contact lenses will destroy your vision over time. Apparently they 'lock the eyes into their refractive state and in order to see through your lenses you have to maintain the poor vision that the lenses are designed to correct.'
Instead, what Dr Bates and Co. claim we need, is to understand the most effective way to fine tune and naturally heal the human eye.
Vision problems, they claim, are a learned trait, which is why babies can learn to crawl and walk and people living in remote locations can survive. Why, they ask, are so many people dependent on wearing glasses when you didn't need them as a small child and neither do those living in the wild?
The major underlying cause of vision problems, according to Dr. Bates, is 'abnormal action of the external muscles of the eyeball... with the relief of this strain the action of the muscles becomes normal and all errors of refraction disappear.'
So the theory is that these bad habits can be unlearned - and help you improve your eyesight naturally.
The program includes a 15 minute action plan based on Bates' eye exercises, designed to force your visual system to self-correct. It also addresses the 'proper' way to use glasses and contacts without ruining your progress towards natural vision, and how to correct strained and stressed eyesight.
So what do users say about this program? Does it really work?
Unfortunately, for all of us who spend a large part of the day putting on glasses and then taking them off for different tasks... it doesn't seem so.
There are anecdotal reports of success with Bates' methods (including well-publicized support by Aldous Huxley) but there is no objective evidence that his techniques improve eyesight; moreover, the main physiological proposition that the eyeball changes shape to maintain focus has not been consistently proved.
The most telling argument against the methods proposed in Vision with Glasses is that they haven't born fruit - if they worked, then glasses would be, 'as obsolete as horse-drawn carriages.'
Vision without Glasses claims to be 'Dr Bates on Steroids', restoring 'near perfect vision in just 1-3 months.'
But the customers and users beg to differ.
'There is no serious science showing that any eye exercises will ever stop the need for eyeglasses or contacts,' said one forum user. 'The Bates subculture continues to propogate their concepts that boil down to old wive's tales, really no proven science.'
The emphasis on relaxation and visualization may be helpful for some people; however this is purely subjective, and throwing away your glasses - as Bates recommended - could be a safety hazard. In fact most teachers of the Bates method caution that when driving, you should wear the legally required level of correction.
Which kind of takes the bite out of the argument that 'near perfect vision' can be restored.
There is good science behind keeping fit, exercising regularly and eating fruit and vegetables to help prevent age-related eye problems. There's truth in them there carrots!
There has been some experimental research into Bates' techniques, including 'sunning', 'swinging', and 'palming', which were combined with healthy changes to diet and exercise in a 1983 trial of myopic children in India. After 6 months, the children, 'did not show any statistically significant difference in refractive status' however they did, 'subjectively ... feel relieved of eye strain and other symptoms.'
So relaxation and relief from stress might be helpful.
But otherwise independent evidence for good results from Vision without Glasses is lacking.
