Does the Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System Stack Up to the Competition?

The smallest version of Clarisonic's skin cleansing devices, the Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System is also considered a bargain: It retails for $119, nearly $100 cheaper than its classic and professional models. Though still being an expensive investment, the Mia stands out due to its powerful exfoliation brush--nicknamed the electronic toothbrush for your face. Here is my review.

Pros:

  • Helps exfoliate and cleanse the skin
  • Small and compact; good for travel use
  • Good at removing blackheads and dead skin

Cons:

  • Not cheap; retails for $119, despite being Clarisonic's cheapest model
  • Only has one speed setting
  • Doesn't help reduce or stop acne

Design

The Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System is a part of Clarisonic's line of skin cleansing products--which range from compact devices such as the Mia to professional-grade models, which exfoliate both the face and the body. Unfortunately, the Mia is its cheapest model, and therefore lacks the range of features found in Clarisonic's more expensive models, such as choosing the speed of exfoliation and settings for body exfoliation. On an upside, the Mia is the only brand in this line that comes in 16 colors; its other models come in a mere three shades.

Its cheap price tag ($119) also means you're paying for less of it: It's a compact exfoliator that is clearly only meant to treat the face. Unfortunately, you also lose out on a comfier, sturdier handle, with little grip area to keep it steady in your hand during face washing. In comparison, the classic and professional models contain a grey matte grip hold that is resistant to slipping in soap or water.

Design-wise, the Mia stays pretty simplistic--a small, rotating exfoliation brush sits on the top of a ergonimcally-designed handle, but this is the extent of its features. It's a simple brush, designed for a simple task: To exfoliate your face quickly and efficiently.

How it Works

For quick face exfoliation, the Mia works simply--by lightly scrubbing the face with its soft bristles, which remove debris and dead skin from the face. Unlike other exfoliators, the Mia is a gentle device, which gently scrubs instead of abrasively scratching or rubbing the face.

Its exfoliation capabilities also work as a deep cleanser--removing not only dead skin cells, but also other particles, such as leftover makeup residue, dirt, and other particles that can contribute to acne or blackheads. The Mia also has a timer so you know when to stop cleansing, which usually runs on 60 minute intervals. Go over 60 minutes and it turns off, letting you know you've thoroughly cleansed your skin.

"While this is definitely a bit of a splurge, it is a great investment in your face. I use it once a day--it turns off after 60 seconds so you don't have to worry about overuse," says Annie, a Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System user. "After use I put on some moisturizer."

And indeed, it does seem effective for cleansing the face--many customers report having smoother, less hyperpigmented skin after regular use; some claim it's good for controlling rosacea. Many customers also report having less blackheads, though responses are mixed about its ability to prevent acne.

What the Customers Think

Though it's not a perfect (or a perfectly-priced product), many customers love the Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System. Here is what they had to say:

"This little gadget is critical if you want to get the most out of your skin care products. It really does clean your skin 6x greater than washing alone. It leaves your skin open and ready to accept healing and moisturizing anti aging products or prepped and ready for acne products." - SteviRox (ULTA.com)

"If you want to get your skin its best shape, the Clarisonic can help. It gives skin a softer, smoother appearance while deep cleansing every time you use it without irritating even sensitive skin." - Christine (Temptalia.com)

"This brush is a must for everyone! It really helps to improve skin and tighten those pores. The skin is so clean afterwards and great to soak in those serums and masks afterwards." - SpaMom (ULTA.com)

Verdict

Although pricey, the Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System helps smooth and exfoliate skin in just a minute--and it can even remove blackheads and other unwanted baddies on the skin.  My recommendation: If price isn't an issue, go with this device.
