If you dread going to the dentist nowadays, just try and imagine what it was like before highly trained doctors were practicing dentistry and allegedly "skilled" laborers called barber-surgeons were the ones running the show. They were yanking teeth out for any ol' reason, even after the infection had already spread to the gums and antibiotics were the only things that would really help. They usually didn't have anesthetic either, it was a pretty rare commodity. So just think about that for a minute.
